About Westby
Westby was settled by Norwegian immigrants, many from the Biri area of Norway, and it is named for Ole T. Westby, a Civil War soldier who kept the general store. Its Coon Prairie Lutheran congregation dates to 1851, the railroad came in 1879, and Westby became a city in 1896 at the headwaters of the Bad Axe River. Farming built the town, and with seven cooperatives still at work it has been called Co-op City. Every winter the Snowflake Ski Club holds a ski jump on one of the largest hills in the country, and each May the town turns out for Syttende Mai, a three-day Norwegian festival with food, crafts and a hunt for a hidden troll.
