About Wisconsin Dells
The Ho-Chunk call this place by a name meaning rocks close together, for the sandstone gorge the Wisconsin River cuts here, and French travelers named the narrows the dalles. The town began in 1856 as Kilbourn City, where the railroad crossed the river, and boat tours of the Dells started that same year. Photographer H. H. Bennett's pictures of the rock formations drew sightseers from across the country, and in 1931 the town took the name Wisconsin Dells. Today families come for boat and duck tours, water parks and the downtown riverwalk, and locals gather for the Wo-Zha-Wa Fall Festival and the Tree of Light holiday lights downtown.
