About Baraboo

Abe Wood started the settlement in 1838 along the Baraboo River, first calling it Adams; it became the Sauk County seat in 1846 and took the river's name in 1852. In 1884 the Ringling brothers began their circus here, and their winter quarters made Baraboo known as 'Circus City.' Today families visit Circus World, the museum on the old winter quarters with live circus shows each summer, catch a show at the 1915 Al. Ringling Theatre, and stroll the shops around the Courthouse Square. Devil's Lake State Park, Wisconsin's largest, is close by in the Baraboo Hills.
