About Prairie du Sac
Prairie du Sac takes its name from the Sauk people, who had a large village on this stretch of the Wisconsin River valley, and D.B. Crocker founded the village in 1840. In 1913 it opened the brick Tripp Memorial Library and Hall, paid for mostly by J.S. Tripp, and in 1914 the big dam just north of town began making power and formed Lake Wisconsin. Each winter bald eagles gather on the open water below the dam, and people watch them from the overlook on Water Street. Every Labor Day weekend the village hosts the Wisconsin State Cow Chip Throw.
