About Algoma
Algoma began in 1834 as a small settlement called Ahnapee at the mouth of the Ahnapee River on Lake Michigan, and Irish, English, German, Bohemian, Scandinavian and Belgian settlers soon came to farm, saw lumber and fish. It became a city in 1879 and took the name Algoma in 1897, at a time when its fishing fleet was the biggest on Lake Michigan. The little pierhead lighthouse at the end of the pier has guided boats into the harbor since 1893, and sport fishing still brings people to town. Today families walk the boardwalk at Crescent Beach, bike the Ahnapee State Trail, and come downtown for the summer car show, the Concerts in the Park series and Shanty Days in August.
