About Denmark
Denmark was first settled in 1848 by immigrants from the Danish island of Langeland, and the first Danish couple here, Niels Gotfredsen and his wife, were nicknamed the King and Queen of Denmark. Hans Beyer opened the first store in 1875 and later its first cheese factory, and the place was known as Copenhagen until the railroad arrived in 1906 and the post office asked for the name Denmark. It became a village in 1915 and grew up around dairy, with a big cheddar plant that ran for decades. The old rail line is now the Devil's River State Trail, which starts at a depot-style shelter in town and crosses two railroad trestles on its way toward Manitowoc. Each July families line the streets for the Lions parade of tractors and floats, and Memorial Park has ball diamonds, a wading pool, a sledding hill and a tractor pull area.
