About Kewaunee
Kewaunee sits where the Kewaunee River meets Lake Michigan, a place that was a Potawatomi village when the French priest Jacques Marquette stopped here in 1674. The town we know began in 1836, when false rumors of gold in the river drew settlers; no gold turned up, so the ones who stayed built a sawmill and a harbor for the lumber trade, and Kewaunee became the county seat in 1852. Many Czech and German families came in the late 1800s, and on the courthouse square downtown the 1876 sheriff's house and jail still stands, now a summer museum. Today families walk the harbor out to the 1931 pierhead lighthouse, tour the World War II tugboat Ludington, play on the beach at Selner Park and Father Marquette Park, and come to story times at the library.
