About Oconto
People of the Old Copper culture lived near the mouth of the Oconto River thousands of years ago and buried their dead here, in what the city calls eastern North America's oldest dated cemetery. The name comes from a Menominee word meaning 'the place of the pike.' George Lurwick built a home and sawmill on the river in 1836, and by the 1860s as many as 12 sawmills ran at once; Oconto became a city in 1869. In 1886 neighbors built the world's first Christian Science church, which still stands on Chicago Street. Today families fish the river and the bay, visit the Copper Culture museum and the Beyer Home Museum, and come downtown for Copperfest each June.
