About Anoka
Settlers first arrived where the Rum and Mississippi rivers meet in 1844, and by the mid-1850s the village had a school, a store and a flour mill, with pine logs floating down the Rum River to its sawmills. Anoka was formally made a city in 1878, and its name may come from a Dakota word meaning on both sides. The town holds one of the country's first Halloween parades, from 1920, and calls itself the Halloween Capital of the World. Each October a volunteer group puts on parades, a house decorating contest and a coronation for the 100-plus-year-old festival.
