About Coon Rapids
Coon Rapids is a northern suburb of Minneapolis beside the Mississippi River, named for Coon Creek and the raccoons once hunted there. Its first businesses grew along the old Red River Ox Cart Trail, now Coon Rapids Boulevard, and a brick and terra cotta company dug the clay pit locals still call the Clay Hole. Building the dam in 1912 to 1914 brought workers and made the town grow. Today people walk and bike across the dam, visit Bunker Hills and its water park, and fish and paddle on Crooked and Cenaiko lakes.
