About Blaine
Blaine became its own township in 1877, when it split from Anoka and took the name of Maine statesman James G. Blaine. Its sandy soil and many wetlands kept farmers away, so for years it stayed a quiet hunting area. After World War II, new neighborhoods began to fill the south end, and the town grew from about 1,700 people in 1950 to more than 70,000 today. Now people know it for the National Sports Center with its soccer fields and big ice arena, 66 parks, and a 500-acre wetland sanctuary with a boardwalk.
