About Aurora
Aurora was laid out in 1898 on the Mesabi Iron Range, a stretch of northeastern Minnesota that produced a large share of the nation's iron and taconite ore. It became a city and got its post office in 1903. The town sits among mixed pine and hardwood forest and many lakes, at the edge of the Superior National Forest and two miles from Giants Ridge. Each summer the Northern Lights Music Festival, based in Aurora, brings opera, chamber and orchestra music to towns across the Range, and neighbors hunt, fish, ski and ride ATV and snowmobile trails that reach toward Lake Superior.
