About Virginia

Virginia began as a logging settlement. The site was planned in 1892 and named for the home state of many lumber workers, then iron mining made it the commercial center of the Iron Range. After a fire destroyed downtown in 1900 the city required brick for new stores on Chestnut Street, which gave it the sturdy brick downtown it has today. People call it the Queen City of the North. Neighbors enjoy summer band concerts and a greenhouse in Olcott Park, walks around Silver Lake, and the Land of the Loon festival each June.
