About Mountain Iron
Mountain Iron began in 1892 as a mining village beside the Mountain Iron Mine, the first mine on the Mesabi Range, opened by the Merritt brothers. The iron dug here helped make Minnesota the country's top iron producer, and the old mine is now a National Historic Landmark you can look down into from an overlook in town. The city calls itself the Taconite Capital of the World, and the big Minntac mine still works nearby. Today people bike the Mesabi Trail, camp and fish at West Two Rivers, and gather every August for Merritt Days.
