About Babbitt
Babbitt grew up in the 1940s and 1950s as a planned home for workers at a new taconite iron mine on the far eastern end of the Mesabi Iron Range. Ore from the mine rode the rails about 60 miles to Silver Bay on Lake Superior, a sister town built at the same time. The town is named for Kurnal R. Babbitt, a New York judge who was a lawyer for mining companies, and it became a city in 1956. Today people come for Birch Lake and the public beach, the city campground and golf course, and the Heartland ATV Trail, and neighbors meet at the Thursday farmers market in summer.
