About Hoyt Lakes
Hoyt Lakes is a young town on the eastern Mesabi Iron Range. Its first homes went up in 1954, when Erie Mining Company brought in workers for a new taconite mine, and the town was formed in 1955. That fall the new neighbors held a picnic at Birch Cove on Colby Lake, and it grew into the Hoyt Lakes Water Carnival, now a four-day festival every July. Today the town sits between Colby and Whitewater lakes, and people camp at Fisherman's Point, swim at Birch Cove Beach, play hockey at the arena and ride snowmobile trails all winter.
