About Avon
Avon was laid out in 1873 in the oak hills of Stearns County and took its name from the River Avon in England; it became a city in 1900. The paved Lake Wobegon Trail runs right through town on an old Great Northern rail line, and Avon's trailhead park has an observation tower and a band shell. Families swim at the public beach on Middle Spunk Lake, and in June people ride out to see Minnesota's state flower, the showy lady's slipper, blooming beside the trail. Each June the town throws Spunktacular Days with a parade, and in December the trailhead lights up for the Magic of Christmas.
