About Richmond
Richmond was laid out in 1856 by Reuben Richardson, a farmer from Sauk Rapids, as a square of seven blocks by seven blocks. When it became a town in 1890 it had to go by the name Torah, because another Minnesota town was already called Richmond; the old name came back in 1909. In the 1950s two local men, Ambrose Weeres and Edwin Torborg, built the first pontoon boat here. The town sits on the Horseshoe Chain of Lakes along the Sauk River, in granite country, and people come for the lakes, the Glacial Lakes State Trail and the swimming beach at Lions Park. Each July the town gathers for River Lake Days, and in December for TREEmendous Night downtown.
