About Ely
Ely began in 1888, when the railroad reached the Vermilion iron range and miners opened the Chandler Mine; the town was named for mining executive Samuel B. Ely. The Pioneer Mine, opened in 1889, was the range's biggest producer and closed in 1967. Ely lives on the edge of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, so canoeists and campers fill the town each summer. People come to see black bears at the Bear Center, wolves at the International Wolf Center, and the cabin of Dorothy Molter, the Root Beer Lady. Neighbors gather in Whiteside Park for the Blueberry Arts Festival, the Harvest Moon Festival and a winter festival.
