About Middleton
English settlers came to the western shore of Lake Mendota in the 1840s, and the place was first called Peatville for the peat dug from its wet ground. In 1848 it split from the town of Madison and was renamed Middleton, after a town in Vermont, and German families arrived through the 1850s. The railroad came in 1856, and its wooden 1895 depot still stands downtown. Middleton became a village in 1905 and a city in 1963, and it calls itself the Good Neighbor City. Today families walk the trails of Pheasant Branch Conservancy, go to the National Mustard Museum, and come out each August for National Mustard Day and the Good Neighbor Festival.
