About Bayside
Bayside sits on the bluffs and ravines above Lake Michigan, where in the early 1900s wealthy Milwaukee families built summer homes; the stone Lion's Gates from 1911 still mark two of those old estates on Lake Drive. Starting in 1885 the Uihlein family, owners of the Schlitz brewery, gathered farmland here as Nine Mile Farm, where they kept the brewery's draft horses. In 1953, 467 residents voted to make Bayside its own village rather than join Milwaukee. In 1971 the old farm became the Schlitz Audubon Nature Center, where families now hike to Mystery Lake, climb the lookout tower and walk down to the lakeshore.
