About Fond du Lac
Fond du Lac means 'bottom of the lake' in French, and the city sits right at the south end of Lake Winnebago, where Native nations including the Ho-Chunk (Winnebago) and Potawatomi lived before settlers came in the 1830s. It grew from a village in 1847 to a city in 1852, the same year the first railroad arrived, and lumber and milling money built much of its old brick downtown. Lakeside Park, more than 400 acres on the lake, is the town's front yard, with a 1933 lighthouse that is open to visitors from mid-April to mid-October, a carousel and a little train. Each June about 50,000 people come to the park for the free Walleye Weekend, and in September Main Street fills up for Fondue Fest with cheese and chocolate fondue.
