About West Bend
West Bend began in 1845, when three men laying out a road between Milwaukee and Fond du Lac picked a spot halfway along, where the Milwaukee River bends to the west, so its water could run a sawmill and a gristmill. It became the seat of Washington County in 1853, a village in 1868 and a city in 1885, and German families made up most of the early town. The railroad came in 1873, and factories that made wagons, leather wallets and aluminum kitchenware followed. Today people walk the paved riverwalk, shop the big Saturday farmers' market on Main Street, and visit the Museum of Wisconsin Art on the river.
