About Belgium
Belgium began in the late 1840s, when farm families from Luxembourg settled the northern corner of Ozaukee County, a couple of miles from Lake Michigan. A mix-up over post office names is said to have swapped two towns' names, so this Luxembourg settlement ended up called Belgium. Railroads in 1864 and 1872, and later an interurban line to Milwaukee, drew homes and shops around the station, and the village was incorporated in 1922. The Luxembourg American Cultural Society has been here since 1977, with its Roots and Leaves Museum in a rebuilt 1872 stone barn, and Main Street banners still say "Wëllkomm." Today families bike the Ozaukee Interurban Trail, play in the village parks with their splash pad and skating rink, and come out each August for Luxembourg Fest and its treipen-eating contest.
