About Oostburg
Dutch immigrants settled Oostburg in the 1840s and named it after a town in the Netherlands. In 1879 Peter Daane, who had come from Zeeland as a boy, bought the mill, grain elevator and lumberyard here, and by 1907 the village had a canning company, a steel foundry and a hotel called the Oostburg House. Oostburg became a village in 1909, and today small windmills and tulips around town still honor its Dutch roots, along with a yearly Heritage Day. Families meet at the library for story time and craft clubs, and cheer on the Oostburg Dutchmen.
