About Saukville
Saukville grew up where two old trails met the Milwaukee River, and settlers began building along Green Bay Road around 1845. In 1848 William Payne opened a stagecoach inn for travelers between Milwaukee and Green Bay, and neighbors dammed the river for a sawmill and a grist mill. For many years it was a mill and market town for dairy farmers, and it became a village in 1915 with 376 people. Today families fish and paddle the river from the village parks, shop the Sunday farmers market in Veterans Park, and walk the boardwalk at the nearby Cedarburg Bog.
