About Port Washington

Port Washington began in 1835 at the mouth of Sauk Creek on Lake Michigan, where a Potawatomi village had stood, and it took President George Washington's name. With no natural harbor and many shipwrecks, the town dug its own harbor in 1871, and it grew on fishing, shipping and the Wisconsin Chair Company, once the county's biggest employer. It has been the Ozaukee County seat since the county was formed in 1853. Today people walk the breakwater to its Art Deco lighthouse, tour the 1860 light station museum on the bluff, and come every July for Fish Day, a giant outdoor fish fry held since 1964.
