About Bemidji
Bemidji sits where the Mississippi River flows through Lake Bemidji. The name comes from an Ojibwe word for a lake with crossing waters, and Shaynowishkung became the first permanent settler in 1882. Logging and sawmills grew the village, which was chartered in 1896, and the statues of Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox went up in 1937. Now people come for the lake, trails, curling, Art in the Park and winter fun at Polar Days.
