About Brainerd
Brainerd was planned by the Northern Pacific Railroad, whose president named the town in 1870 for his wife's family. The railroad built a bridge over the Mississippi River and a big shops yard here, and for decades most families depended on the railroad. The town became a city in 1873. Today people know it for the Brainerd Lakes area, summer cabin trips, a concrete water tower from 1918 that still stands as a city icon, and the old railroad buildings turned into breweries and coffee shops.
