About Big Bend
Big Bend is named for the spot where the Fox River turns from flowing east to flowing south, a name first given by the Native people who lived here. Families from Andover, Vermont, came in the late 1830s and 1840s, and Colonel Orien Haseltine's cobblestone house, finished in 1842, still stands on Big Bend Drive as one of the area's first lasting homes. The village was formed in 1928. Today it keeps a rural feel close to the whole Milwaukee area, with the Village Park on Riverside Drive, a village library on Nevins Street, and the old Rural Home Cemetery looking out over the river.
