About Black Creek
Black Creek began in 1862, when Civil War veteran Thomas J. Burdick and his son Abraham settled at the spot first called Middleburg, about halfway between Green Bay, Shawano and Appleton. After the railroad came in 1871, the lumber camp grew into a shipping town for farm and dairy goods, and for years the area led the nation in making sauerkraut. When it became a village in 1904, it took its name from the dark creek along its northern edge. Black Creek is known as the birthplace of Wisconsin baseball, and neighbors still meet at the crossroads of Highways 47 and 54, along the Newton Blackmour State Trail, and at the summer Fire and Rescue Picnic.
