About Little Chute

French traders named this spot on the Fox River La Petite Chute, the little falls, and in 1836 the Dutch priest Theodore van den Broek built a mission church, St. John Nepomucene, here. His letters home drew about 900 Dutch Catholics from North Brabant, who arrived by ship, train, canal boat and ox cart in 1848 and cleared farms from the forest. Little Chute grew into the largest Catholic Dutch community in the country, with canals and locks built around the rapids and Dutch spoken in church into the 1890s. Today its tall wooden Dutch windmill grinds grain into flour beside a museum of that history, and each June families crowd Doyle Park for the Great Wisconsin Cheese Festival, with a parade and a cheese curd eating contest.
