About Hortonville
Hortonville began in 1848, when Alonzo Horton bought land here, built a cabin and dammed Black Otter Creek, making the 75-acre Black Otter Lake. He laid out the town the next year, then left for the California gold rush and later helped build San Diego. The railroad arrived in 1873, the town had one of the first match factories in the world, and it became a village in 1894. Today families fish from the piers on Black Otter Lake, Outagamie County's only public-access lake, ride the Wiouwash Trail, and gather at the 1912 Community Hall on Main Street.
