About Appleton
Appleton grew up along the Fox River, on land the Menominee and Ho-Chunk knew first; the Menominee name for it means 'watches for them place.' It was settled in 1847, the same year Lawrence University was founded, and took its name from Samuel Appleton, who gave money for the college library. Three river villages joined in 1853, and Appleton became a city in 1857. Paper mills powered the town, and in 1882 the Fox River ran the nation's first hydroelectric central station, which lit the Hearthstone house. Today people walk College Avenue, visit the Houdini exhibit at the History Museum at the Castle, and fill downtown for the free Mile of Music festival each August.
