About Black Earth
Black Earth grew up among rich farm soil about 20 miles west of Madison, where the first European settlers came to stay in 1843. For a few years the town was called Farmersville, but the Black Earth name came back, and the village was formed in 1857. The railroad came through too, and the 1874 Milwaukee Road depot by the tracks on Mills Street is now the historical society's museum, open on summer Sunday afternoons. A cooperative store started here in 1886, and its brick store from 1933 still stands downtown. Today the village is a small, friendly stop on Mills Street, surrounded by farms and close to the popular Black Earth Creek.
