About Barneveld
Barneveld got its start in 1881, when David Simpson offered the railroad a right of way for one dollar if it would put a depot on his land, and then divided his land into lots. The name may come from a Dutch railroad surveyor's hometown, or from a 16th-century Dutch leader Mrs. Simpson admired, and the village voted to incorporate in 1906 at its opera house. It sits in the rolling hills of the Driftless Region, about half an hour west of Madison, near the Military Ridge Trail and Blue Mound State Park. Families gather at Memorial Park, newly fixed up with a splash pad, a sport court and a new shelter, and the village celebrates its yearly Fair Day.
