About Mount Horeb
James Morrison bought the land in 1849, and in 1861 postmaster George Wright named the post office Mount Horeb after the mountain in the Bible. Norwegian immigrants began arriving in 1871 and shaped the village, and in the 1980s it began calling itself the 'Troll Capital of the World,' with about 40 carved and painted trolls along Main Street, the Trollway. The Driftless Historium, opened in 2017, tells the story of the area's people and land, and the village sits in the rolling hills of the Driftless Area near Blue Mound State Park. Families bike the Military Ridge State Trail, a 39-mile path on an old railroad line, and hunt for trolls downtown.
