About Mazomanie
English settlers sent by a temperance emigration society began farming the Black Earth Creek valley in 1844, and in 1855 the Milwaukee and Mississippi Railroad laid out a town here on its way to the Wisconsin River. The town took its name from a Ho-Chunk chief whose name, Iron Walker, also fit a railroad town, and by 1876 it was the second-largest community in Dane County. Because Mazomanie grew slowly after that, its 1800s main street survived: thirty-four downtown buildings are on the National Register of Historic Places, led by the wooden 1857 railroad depot. Today people stroll the brick storefronts of Brodhead Street, and in 2008 Budget Travel magazine named it one of America's Coolest Small Towns.
