About Fridley

Fridley sits where Rice Creek meets the Mississippi River, along the old Red River ox-cart trail. Settler John Banfill arrived in 1847 and the place was first called Manomin, the Ojibwe word for wild rice. The name changed to honor Abram Fridley in 1879, and the village was incorporated in 1949, followed by city status in 1957. Today people know it as Friendly Fridley, for the 127-acre Springbrook Nature Center with its 1,000 carved pumpkins each October, and for the '49er Days summer festival.
