About New Brighton
New Brighton sits north of St. Paul on land once used by Dakota people, who gathered wild rice near its marshy lakes. Settlers from Britain and France started a small village in 1858, and a stockyard company that opened in 1888 helped the place grow until it became a village in 1891. It was named after Brighton, Massachusetts. Today people walk and picnic at Long Lake Regional Park, visit the old railroad depot that is now a history center, and come together each August for Stockyard Days.
