About Sauk Rapids

Sauk Rapids began in 1851 along the Mississippi River, where rapids just below the mouth of the Sauk River gave the town its name. It grew along the Red River Trails and became the end of the railroad line in 1874. Settlers hauled produce there to ship it, and the town had the first newspaper outside St. Paul, started in 1854. Today it is a river city next to St. Cloud, with a regional bridge over the Mississippi and a museum in a granite house built in 1873.
