About St. Cloud

St. Cloud began in the 1850s as three small settlements on the Mississippi River, and it was named after a town near Paris. The city grew with German Catholic settlers, river trade and the granite quarried nearby that gave it the nickname Granite City. Today the river is lined with parks, including the Munsinger and Clemens gardens, and the Beaver Islands are a favorite paddling spot. It is also a college town, home to St. Cloud State University, and its old downtown theater and cathedral are still gathering places.
