About Riverwest
Riverwest grew up on the west bank of the Milwaukee River, where dams built from the 1830s powered mills, and a town called Humboldt was laid out in 1850. By the 1880s Polish immigrants were settling here, and in 1899 they began St. Casimir Church, a cream brick church with two towers of different heights. Over the years German, Polish, Italian, Puerto Rican and African American families all made homes in its duplexes, bungalows and Polish flats. Neighbors chose the name Riverwest in 1978. Today people bike its side streets, shop at the co-op, swim and picnic at Gordon Park on the river, and fill the streets each July for the Riverwest 24 bike ride.
