About Harambee
Harambee sits on a high ridge just north of downtown, and its ridge along First Street is the highest place to live in the city. German families settled here in the 1800s, and between 1890 and 1910 merchants built big Queen Anne houses with corner turrets on First, Second and Palmer streets. Black families began arriving in the 1930s, opening churches and businesses along Third Street, and in the 1970s neighbors took the Swahili name Harambee, which means pulling together. Juneteenth has been celebrated on the street since 1972, and in 1985 Third Street became Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive. Today families visit the new King library, play at Rose Park and walk among the old frame houses and churches.
