About Caledonia
Potawatomi people lived here first, and around 1832 the fur traders Jacques and Louis Vieau ran a trading post at a spot called Skunk Grove. Settlers such as Levi Blake staked claims along the Root River in 1835, and in 1842 the Town of Caledonia was formed, named after Blake's home county in Vermont. Bohemian farm families came from 1849 on, and a sauerkraut maker that opened in 1907 is likely how Skunk Grove got its newer name, Franksville. Caledonia became a village in 2005. Today families visit the Caledonia Historical Village in Linwood Park, where an 1877 town hall, an old railroad depot, a caboose and a log cabin open their doors one Sunday a month in summer.
