About Oak Creek
Oak Creek began on August 13, 1840, when the south part of the Town of Lake was split off to make its own town on the shore of Lake Michigan. For a century it stayed mostly farms, and in 1955 the town of under 5,000 people became a city so it could stay on its own beside growing Milwaukee. By the lake, the old Carrollville neighborhood grew up around a distillery and later a glue factory that used leather scraps from Milwaukee tanneries. Today families meet at Drexel Town Square, built where a big spark plug factory once stood, for the library, the splash pad, the ice rink and the farmers market, and walk the beaches at Bender Park and Lake Vista Park.
