About South Milwaukee
South Milwaukee was laid out in 1891 by the South Milwaukee Company on the Lake Michigan shore south of Milwaukee, planned from the start as a factory town of its own. The Bucyrus steam-shovel company moved here in 1893, and its shovels went on to dig much of the Panama Canal. English and German immigrants filled the new homes, and the town became a village in 1892 and a city in 1897. Today families hike the Seven Bridges Trail in Grant Park down to the Lake Michigan beach, and visit the historical society's museum in an 1897 house on Milwaukee Avenue.
