About Canby
Canby began in 1874 as a post office in John Swenson's little homestead store, named for General Edward Canby. When the Winona and St. Peter Railroad platted a town here in 1876, it grew fast and became a village in 1879 and a city in 1905. After a fire in 1893 burned most of Main Street, the town rebuilt in brick and stone, and that downtown is now a National Register historic district. Today Canby calls itself the Gateway to the Prairie: people visit the depot museum and the Lund-Hoel House, catch a movie at the 1939 Canby Theatre, and gather for Hat Daze each June and the Yellow Medicine County Fair each July.
