About Madison
Madison was laid out in 1884 on a wheat field beside the new Minneapolis and St. Louis Railroad, and many families moved their houses across the prairie from Lac qui Parle Village to be near the tracks. C.P. Moe suggested the name after his old home of Madison, Wisconsin, and the town won the county seat in 1889. A brick courthouse with a tall tower went up in 1899, and fires along Main Street left downtown lined with brick buildings. Since 1982 Madison has called itself the Lutefisk Capital of the USA, and a 25-foot fiberglass cod named Lou T. Fisk greets drivers on Highway 75. Each November the town gathers for Norsefest, with a lutefisk eating contest and a Scandinavian arts fair.
