About Cottonwood
Cottonwood sits on the east shore of Cottonwood Lake in Lyon County, in the farm country of southwest Minnesota, and it takes its name from the big cottonwood trees along the water. Martin Norseth got the town's businesses going, and his Colonial Revival house from about 1898 on East Main Street is now on the National Register of Historic Places. The town had 549 people in 1900 and has about 1,150 today. Lakeview Public Schools, home of the blue-and-black Lakers, has its high school and elementary school in town, and the Cottonwood Country Club golf course sits near the lake. Each July, Coming Home Days brings old classmates back for a car show, a parade, street dances and fireworks over the lake.
